Dr. Powe is Chief of Medicine at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Constance B. Wofsy Distinguished Professor at the University of California San Francisco. He serves as administrative leader of the Department of Medicine at San Francisco’s flagship, safety net, public hospital overseeing clinical practice, medical education and research. His scholarship in medicine, public health and health equity have influenced clinical practice and health policy. He co-chaired the National Kidney Foundation-American Society of Nephrology Task Force on Reassessing the Use of Race in the Diagnosis of Kidney Diseases and developed an approach to measure kidney function that does not use race and is being implemented across the U.S. A member of the National Academy of Medicine, American Society of Clinical Investigation, Association of American Physicians, Master of American College of Physicians (ACP) and Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science, his honors include the Diversity Award (Association Professors of Medicine), John Eisenberg Award for Career Achievement in Research and Glaser Award (Society of General Internal Medicine), Belding Scribner Award (ASN), and Phillips Award for Distinguished Contributions in Clinical Medicine (ACP). He chairs the JAMA Oversight Committee. He holds a B.A. degree from Princeton University, MD/MPH from Harvard and completed residency and was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania.
