Sarah Braunstein, PhD, MPH, is the Assistant Commissioner for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Bureau of Hepatitis, HIV, and Sexually Transmitted Infections (BHHS). In this role, she oversees New York City’s response to viral hepatitis, HIV, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including testing initiatives; prevention, care, and treatment programming; epidemiology and surveillance; training and technical assistance; community engagement; social marketing; policy advocacy; and racial equity and social justice initiatives. Dr. Braunstein has extensive background and training in epidemiologic methods and implementation science, having conducted domestic and international clinical studies and epidemiologic research on the prevention and epidemiology of HIV and other STIs for over 20 years. As BHHS’s Assistant Commissioner, Sarah has the privilege of working with a fantastic and brilliant team of committed public health professionals to optimize the impact of the Bureau’s work on the health and well-being of New Yorkers, while centering health equity and workforce justice as linchpins to the success of the work.
