Jeffrey M. Birnbaum, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Public Health at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. He is a Downstate alumnus and is the Executive Director of Health & Education Alternatives for Teens (“HEAT”). At HEAT, he has provided medical care to hundreds of HIV youth ages 13-24 years since 1992. Dr. Birnbaum is an adolescent medicine specialist who has focused most of his professional career working with HIV youth, PrEP services for youth and has pioneered the field of gender-affirming care for transgender youth in Brooklyn.
